Coming Home

Maps alone are not enough. Researching the 1919 timeline of Between Before and After meant traveling to Brooklyn and walking through the neighborhoods where my characters lived and worked and played. Maps help, but alone they’re not enough. I needed to see the light in autumn at Fort Greene Park, smell the breeze from the East River and imagine Elaine passing the Rockwood Bakery on her way to the market. I needed to imagine her coming home to her family’s flat on Steuben St.

BBA is a story of coming home. Often we discover that home and family, just like the twist in a story, will surprise us because our minds prevent us from seeing the truth, even when it looks us square in the face.
