Relentless Night“A graceful collection, a blend of simple and profound in a very touching exploration of God’s natural world, one deceptively full of faith.”

-Judge from New Eden Chapbook Competition

“I enjoyed these poems very much, found them moving, beautiful—what more can one ask of a poem?”

Hollows

The ravine is a deep cleavage,
a dry wrinkle in the shrub steppe

where riotous phlox ,Carrie’s Balsam Root and stiff
blue sentries of lupine war for moisture,

there is never enough, but scarcity can fool the eye.
This gully surges like a wadi at flood time,
full and frothing, a torrent of tumbleweeds
that traveled parched miles to fill the empty spaces,

to become a river whose source is wind
and seed. Search and you can find life

fighting its way up the gray stream, jumping like fish
in the shallows, lizards, scorpion, vole, they too collect

in empty places. We kneel,
dipping our hands into that which is not water,
how quickly our palms fill, like all the hollows of this world.
