Map Your Way into Story, an interactive idea workshop
We use road maps, google maps, paper maps, even maps on our phones. Why not use a map to
brainstorm ideas for your next story and to keep your story moving in the right direction?
In this hands on workshop students have the opportunity to make their own fantasy maps and use
it to form character, conflict and plot, the basic elements of story. We’ll analyze what elements
move a story forward. Students will leave the workshop ready to begin their own stories.
Poetry Workshop—a reading, writing and spoken word workshop
How do you know a poem when you meet one? What are the elements of good poetry? Students
will play with words, listen to, read and write poetry in this hands on workshop.
Scene Work
Scenes are the basic units of stories and every scene must move the story forward. How do you
write a story scene by scene? What are the elements of good scenes? How can you increase
tension, engage reader’s emotions, reveal more about your characters? Students analyze scenes,
act out a scene and learn how to revise a scene in their own writing.
Fantasy and the Reluctant Hero
Escape to another world or let the magical intrude on your world. Fantasy is the most popular
genre for young adults. Did you know that fantasy stories have rules? How do you create a
