Presentation I: (4th grade and up) Why Fantasy Matters:Fantasy, myth and unlikely heroes : Reading from Wolf Proof, her YA adult fantasy novel and her magical realism poems, Maureen will show how fantasy and myth speak to all people across cultures. Why does fantasy matter and why is it one of the most popular genres for young adults? How do you create fantasy worlds? What is the hero’s journey and how can you use it in your own writing?
Presentation 2: (4th grade and up) The road to publication : How did 18 8-th graders end up finalists for a National Book Award? Where can elementary through high school students get published? Focuses on the road to publication using examples of her own work and student work. Maureen will take students through the process of writing, editing, and finding a publisher.
Presentation 3: (all ages) Word love: how poetry infiltrates our hearts and minds. Start with the most interesting words you know. Think about words that delight you, make you laugh, that are fun to say. Now, take the best words and put them in the best places. You’re on your way to writing a poem.
Presentation 4: (teachers, student teachers and college students) Gifted Readers : How do we best meet the needs of our talented readers? What does research tell us about how these students differ in preferences, and learning style? Included are several assignments that work well for talented readers.
Author presentations last 45-50 minutes and include time for questions and answers , and book signings.
Writing workshops engage students in 45 minute sessions and are limited to one class of students per session.
