Sometimes a review makes me smile. This review of The Peculiars from Jodeana Kruse, a member of the IRA and published in Engage, their social networking site, kept that smile in place for several days.

“…Without once resorting to high-handed preaching, McQuerry depicts the innocent naivete of youth, the ability of evil to cloak itself in attractiveness and power, and the courage of those who are willing to risk everything to do what is right. The story is populated with actual historical characters, providing fodder for research. It’s allegorical quality also infuses it with value as an inspiration for students research similar themes from historical perspectives on slavery, discrimination, and genocide. Even better–it is wholesome enough to be used as a read aloud for students from middle to high school.”
